Congress 2011

On 16 and 17 May 2011 international experts from politics, business and society came together for the first SAVE FOOD Congress. Food loss was referred to as "one of the most pressing problems of the world community” by the responsible FAO Assistant Director-General Modibo Traoré. Prominent speakers such as Prof. Klaus Töpfer, the Federal Consumer Protection Minister Ilse Aigner and the Mayor of Mumbai Shraddha Jadhav, as well as experts from international corporations like Nestlé, Metro and Bosch presented their positions and solution approaches.

In preparation of the congress, the FAO had compiled new studies, which quantified the problem of food loss divided by regions and analyze the underlying causes. The studies of the UN organization also proof that better packaging, especially in developing countries can help to protect foods and thus contribute to a sustainable development in a global scale.

2,200 reports in the media spread the message about the initiative from the experts at the congress to the various industries and to consumers. SAVE FOOD develops into a brand that stands for the fight against wasting food.
