The EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council have decided to phase out discards by the European fishing industry over the next four years. It is estimated that anything from 8 percent (up to 98 percent for some species) – 1.3 million tonnes – of European fish is thrown dead back into the sea. (EC impact assessment, 2011).

One of the reasons for the price increase is the drought in the United States. As a result of numerous droughts food prices are rising on a global scale. Only in July, food prices increased by ten percent, the World Bank announced. The price of wheat and corn increased from June to July by 25 percent each, soybeans by 17 percent. In some countries, prices had shot particularly strong in the air: In Mozambique, the price of corn has risen by 113 percent within a month. "In the meantime, the Sahel Zone and East Africa experience steep price increases for millet: 220 percent and 180 percent in South Sudan in Sudan, for example," says the World Bank. Only the rice prices went down by four percent.

Since June the U.S. is confronted with a heat wave and temperatures of around 40 degrees. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated that only a quarter of the plants are in a good condition. The historic drought in the U.S. and also in India causes massive crop failures. Already now, the world market prices of wheat, corn and soybeans are increasing, placing harsh burdens on the people of poor countries. A global food crisis looms. The G20 want to counteract, but for the poorest of the world it might be too late.
